A screen that stays blank, a laptop that charges slowly or a dock that behaves differently after reconnection can have several causes. The connector shape alone does not tell you whether a cable carries video, power or both. Work from the exact laptop, dock, display and cable combination in front of you. Save your work, change one thing at a time and keep the original arrangement available so you can reverse the test.

Start with the connection path
Trace the signal and power route from the computer to the screen, then check the operating-system arrangement.

Trace the actual connection
Start at the computer and follow the path to the display. Write down the laptop model, dock model, monitor model, charger and cable types. Check which device supplies power and which device carries the display signal.
The same connector shape can support different capabilities. A cable may fit while failing to carry video, provide enough charging power or support the display mode you want. Check the manufacturers' documentation for the exact combination before buying an adapter or replacement cable.
- Confirm the monitor is powered on and set to the matching input.
- Check that the dock has its own required power connection.
- Look for loose, damaged or sharply bent cables.
- Keep the computer, dock and display ventilated.
Set the screen arrangement
On Windows 11, open Settings, then System and Display. Use Identify to match the on-screen numbers to the physical monitors. Arrange the display icons to match their positions, apply the change and move the pointer across the boundary.
Duplicate and extend are different choices. Duplicate shows the same content on each display. Extend creates a larger workspace so windows can be placed on separate screens. Choose the mode that matches the task rather than assuming a second monitor is automatically configured.
On a Mac, use the display controls and instructions for the specific Mac, dock and monitor combination. Do not apply Windows steps to a Mac system.

Test without creating a second problem
Save your work before disconnecting anything. Make one reversible change, such as reseating one cable or selecting the correct input, then check the result. If the result changes, record what changed before continuing.
| Observation | Next bounded check |
|---|---|
| No picture | Check power, selected input and whether the path supports video. |
| Picture but no charging | Check the dock power arrangement and the documented charging capability. |
| Screens appear in the wrong order | Use Identify and arrange the display icons to match the desk. |
Avoid opening equipment, bypassing security controls or starting a firmware update as a first troubleshooting step. Keep the original arrangement if the result is unclear.
