After a transfer, check the new phone or tablet with representative content before making any decision about the old device. Open an older and a recent photo, inspect a contact and calendar entry, review a message and open a local file. Check app content rather than only the app icon. Keep the old device available while downloads, account access, authenticator setup and provider steps are still unresolved.

Open representative content
Choose examples that give you a useful spread rather than checking only the newest item. Open an older photo and a recent photo. Inspect a contact detail and a calendar entry. Review a message and open a sample local file or download. For an important app, check its actual records or account content rather than the presence of its icon.
Cloud content may still be downloading or synchronising. A restored layout is not proof that every item is available. The Apple explanation of iCloud synchronisation and backup is a useful reminder to check synchronised content separately.
Record observations in plain language. For example, “recent photo opened; older folder still pending” is more useful than “transfer successful”. Keep the source device available while any important result is uncertain.
Review access and device settings
Confirm that the destination unlocks normally and that the relevant backup and find-device settings are understood. Use the official device instructions for the exact model and software version. Only change settings you understand, and do not assume that a recovery prompt means recovery is complete.
Authenticator apps and app-specific account access may need a vendor process. Retain the old device until those checks are resolved. Mobile-service activation, SIM or eSIM changes and porting belong to the mobile provider. Wi-Fi and internet access do not prove that mobile calling or SMS is ready.
If you perform an ordinary test of calling or messaging, keep it limited and never use an emergency number as a test. Banking and myGov setup or recovery remain separate official-provider processes and are not part of a standard transfer check.
Record observations and next owners
Use a short pending list to separate what you observed from what still needs action. The example below is fictional and does not represent a completed transfer.
| Item | Observation | Next owner |
|---|---|---|
| Photos | Recent photo opened; older album still pending | Device owner to check sync status |
| Authenticator | App installed; sign-in not verified | App provider process |
| Mobile service | Wi-Fi works; mobile calling not tested | Mobile provider and device owner |
Do not erase, reset, trade in or discard the source because this list is complete. A representative check cannot guarantee that every record transferred. Resolve important pending items first and keep the source unerased until you have made a separate, informed decision.
